The seventh Chess in the Library festival took place on July 9th, 2016 where we continued our tradition of celebrating the tournament at North York Central Library. Like always, there were tons of things to do, including playing on our giant chess set, guessing the chess riddles, doing chess puzzles, guessing how many queens and of course our simultaneous chess with Mike Ivanov and then Rebecca Zhang!
This year the participants played four rounds of chess and were split three divisions: The Grade 3 and under section, the Grade 6 and under section and the Open section. Everyone played their best but inevitably, only one player can take home gold.
The Winners of each section are the following:
The Grade 3 and under section
- First place: Daniel Odoemelam
- Second place: Matthew Do
- Third place: Raymond Mi
The Grade 6 and under section
- First place: Henry Zhang
- Second place: Joey Qiao
- Third place: Brooks Yuan
The Open section
- First place: Cindy Qiao
- Second place: Denis Ryadnov
- Third place: Joshua Jorda
The largest trophy this year however, was awarded towards the overall winner of the annual festival. This award goes to the branch with extraordinary skill, passion, and dedication towards chess. For the third year in a row, Downsview Library took home this victory!
This year’s annual festival was thanks to the dedicated executives of Chess in the library. Shoutout to Jeffrey Li, the President of Chess in the Library and to Kristen Li, the Executive President for the 2016-2017 year. Huge thanks towards all the volunteers who made it out to this festival; without you, the festival would not have been possible.
